March 15 Virtual Retreat Coming For You

Most of you know that I am on the hunt for a new space to do in person retreats. In the interim, I’m offering a short 5 hour virtual retreat on Sunday March 15 from 12-5pmEST (on zoom). It’s just $60 with the option to add on a 30 minute coaching sesh if you want. Here’s the schedule:

We’ll meet on zoom at noon and share our work plans for the day with each other. (12-12:30ish)

Write, write, write. Camera off. If you sign up for an additional 30 minute coaching session we’ll do that during the window. (12:30ish - 4:15/4:30 depending on size of group!)

We’ll report out on how it went, then make a plan for the next leg of work on your project. (4:30 -5)

No sharing and feedback like we do in gen writing/in person retreats. This is a get it done and process talk sort of scene, ideal for folks who have been itching to get a full day of uninterrupted writing in but also want to spend a day in cozy clothes.

Gen Writing Prompt for this Week:

March 3 and March 7, 2026

The Concept

I have been thinking a lot about something a friend told me recently about query letters which is that it’s much easier to pitch a concept than plot. This is interesting to me because a concept can be a container for plot, but a story does not a concept make. In some ways, all a concept is is a writing prompt! The concept — usually a “what would happen if” sort of set up — offers something nonnegotiable about the story that you can build a plot around, so that’s what we’re going to do today. Concepts that are currently in the zeitgeist are: Sky Daddy is about a woman who has a sexual infatuation with planes. In The Hunger Games the concept is:  a totalitarian regime (the Capitol) forces its twelve subjugated districts to annually provide one boy and one girl "tribute" (ages 12-18) to fight to the death in a televised arena. Jurassic Park asks what if scientists cloned Dinosaurs and then opened a theme park?

So this week, let’s imagine a plot derived from one of the following concepts:

  • Vampires at band camp

  • Humans start birthing non-human animals

  • A person believed they are actually a horse trapped in a human body

  • Humans forget that violence is a thing

  • Cats take over a government

  • Aliens save humanity

  • Humans colonize under the ocean after developing the ability to breath under water

  • Trees talk

  • Electrical appliances become alive once plugged in

There is a second earth across the galaxy living an alternate timeline (I’m stealing this from a movie I loved called Another Earth)

More soon. Keep writing, my dearest Book Buddies. You are the best on earth.

Your Bestie —
Kate
